The Wine: JED Malbec 2007
The Mendoza region of Argentina is synomonous with Malbec much in the same way Marlborough is the global sauvignon blanc powerhouse. There’s a lot of interest in Argentinian wine in Sydney at the moment and I’ve lately found myself drinking a lot of Malbec and the Jed one in particular.
Malbec in general is quite a full bodied wine with intense rich fruit flavours and quite velvety tannins. Typically used as part of the classic Bordeaux cabernet based blends, it’s become famous as a straight varietal on the strength of the wine produced in Argentina.
Jed is a label put together by three young Australian wine makers devoted to exploring new world wine regions to produce approachable styles. Their 2007 Malbec is probably a little young and could do with some aging, but that’s the case for pretty much every red you’ll come across. I found it to be quite delciously savoury with strong plum and cherry flavours. Definitely a nice winter red to kick back with.
You can buy it direct from their website for AUD$180 per dozen which is a steal.
